from the greek for "turning towards wholeness", holotropic was coined to describe that process of experiencing everything as interconnected, meaningful, alive; what some might call mystical or ecstatic - those numinous states which can occur spontaneously or through prayer, meditation, chanting, celebration, fasting, spinning, psychedelic ceremony, emerging from depth psychology, LSD research and their own journeys of healing, holotropic breathwork was developed by Stanislav and Christina Grof in the 1970s as a means of opening, of feeling beyond the habitual and the obvious, deepening self-understanding and amplifying one's scope of awareness, through nothing more than the fundamental mechanism of breath, and the power of the group to help and to hold. this workshop follows the Dreamshadow Transpersonal Breathwork model, established by Lenny and Elizabeth Gibson in the direct lineage of the Grofs' original holotropic protocol. like countless ritual and somatic technologies throughout history, transpersonal breathwork employs music, breathing, bodywork and art to evoke non-ordinary states of consciousness. placing it in a modern context, we establish a fully non-hierarchical circle, grounded in direct experience with no further abstractions and with the understanding that you are the expert of yourself. we will not guide you to think or move or be in any particular way beyond that which is necessary for the safety and respect of all present. the material arising from your process could span the full range of your biography, all your joys and sorrows, things you remembered and things you forgot and things you may not have even been aware of. it could call up vibrations of the womb, of the birth process, and even the transpersonal - the mythic domain, what might be referred to as the collective unconscious - sensations and images that don't belong to any one of us, but all of us, together. the process can involve intense physiological, psychic, and emotional realities and is not recommended for anyone who is pregnant, has cardiovascular, glaucomic, or epileptic conditions, a history of psychosis, or has recently undergone surgery. this work has changed my life and i look forward to sharing it with you. see you in the circle, Luke Loseth 🤍 practical matters keep going about Dreamshadow Transpersonal Breathwork the trailer for our documentary Life & Breath Stan Grof's history of holotropic breathwork |
